What are the Best Sheets in Australia?

There is no simple answer to that question. Everyone is different. Climate varies so much in Australia by location and season. We have tried to provide you the information you need here to make the right decision for you. Read on below and good luck!

As most better quality sheets are made of cotton, we'll explain how they are made first. The best sheets start with good quality cotton fibres. Generally longer fibres are better as they can be used to create finer, stronger yarns when wrapped around each other. Short fibres shed and eventually weaken the yarn meaning your sheets won't last as long. The softness of cotton is affected by how many ends you can feel. The less ends you can feel, the softer the sheets will be to the touch.

The next stage is spinning the fibres into yarns. Longer fibres can be spun into finer, stronger yarns. The finer the yarn, the more that can be woven into a given area, which is the thread count. In Australia the thread count is measured per 10 square cm.

As a general rule, the longer the fibre, the finer the yarn, the higher the thread count, the softer and longer lasting your sheets will be which means better quality.

Finally, the way the sheet fabric is finished is critical. You have sheets next to your skin for a third of your life, so you don't want any harsh chemicals in the fabric. No formaldehyde for "wrinkle resistance". No "fabric softeners" which coat the fibres so they won't breathe. No nasty dyes and chlorine bleaches which can be absorbed through your skin.  Eco friendly oxygen whitening and environmentally friendly dyes are now available but they do cost a little more.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult for even experienced people to tell if sheets are genuinely good quality. The best recommendations we can give is to find a retailer you can trust and compare prices. There are a few tell-tale signs you can read in the fine print in the label.

What is the best thread count for sheets?

Obviously there is a limit to the number of threads that will fit in a given area which is approximately 500 threads per 10 square cm. Any higher than that usually indicates that multiple yarns are wrapped around each other. Imagine 10 yarns wrapped around each other then 100 of them woven together. Is that 100 thread count or 1,000 thread count? In Australia that is 1,000 thread count but in the USA it is 100 thread count. It is not necessarily the retailer trying to trick you. For example if you want a high quality, long lasting, heavier weight sheet, it is perfectly acceptable to combine some yarns for 1,000 thread count sheets.

What to avoid when buying sheets

Look out for claims of high thread count at low prices. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Watch out for terms like "micro fibre" or "cotton rich blend". These are retailers who don't want to be up front and honest with you about their sheets containing polyester, which is just another name for plastic.

Avoid sheets made in China. Over 80% of the cotton in China comes from the Xinjiang Region which uses slave labour. (Australian Strategic Policy Institute report) If a retailer cannot assure you where the cotton is from, don't buy it.

30% off! 40% off!  60% off!   We have all seen these so-called sales. There would hardly be a day goes by where we don't see 500 thread count queen size sheets "Was $250, 40% off, now $150" when you should be able to buy good quality 500tc queen size sheets everyday for about $100. Compare prices!

Watch out for exotic blends or made up names you don't recognise. Often these are techniques used by retailers to create the impression of exclusivity or high quality. Linen can be compared to linen. 500tc cotton can be compared to 500tc cotton. etc If you can't find 2 other retailers with the same description, there is a good chance it is overpriced.

Avoid terms like "wrinkle resistant" or "anti bacterial" or "fresh" finishes. If the chemicals used to create these finishes are not clearly listed on the retailer’s web site, don't buy it!

Our best advice - Find a retailer you can trust and compare prices!

Frequently asked Questions

What do warp and weft yarns mean?

Warp refers to the yarns down the length of the fabric when it is being woven while weft yarns are the yarns going across the fabric.

What are percale sheets?

Percale sheets typically have a thread count higher than 225 threads per 10 square cm. They are woven in a traditional basket weave with the yarns one over, one under one over etc. This creates a tightly woven crisp feeling sheet.

What are sateen sheets?

Sateen sheets are made using a weave that typically has one weft yarn go under one warp yarn and then over the next 3 or 4 warp yarns. This creates a softer feel as the fabric drapes and folds better. Think soft flowing silk robe!

What are satin sheets?

Satin usually refers to shiny looking sheets that are usually made of polyester. Polyester is another name for plastic fibres. One to avoid!

What are micro fibre sheets?

Micro fibre is another word for polyester i.e. plastic fibres.

What does cotton Rich blend mean?

Cotton rich usually refers to a blend of cotton and polyester. i.e plastic. Check the retailer’s website.

How often should you wash or change your sheets?

As a general rule we recommend changing and washing your sheets weekly. If you tend to sweat more or live in a hot humid climate, we suggest more often. It definitely helps to leave the covers back for a while each day to air them out. Ideally it is best to have two sets of sheets per bed that you can rotate while one set is being washed.
